5 Reasons to Celebrate the Arts

Celebrating the Arts in Our Community

Ever felt that sense of joy and inspiration when you see art? As Picasso says, “Art washes from the soul the dust of everyday life”. It’s time we bask in the glories of creativity. Here are 5 benefits to invest and celebrate the arts in our community.

  1. Surround Yourself With Good Vibes

You may have art on your walls that help create the energy and vibe you want in your home/office. Viewing art can increase empathy, tolerance and feelings of love. Now, who doesn’t want that in their space? Viewing art can change the way you think and feel, and that’s a beautiful thing. Owning original art enhances the atmosphere in all living spaces so buy art that makes you happy, excited, inspire or even intrigued. Ultimately, it will enrich your quality of life.

  1. Supporting local artists

Buying art not only makes you a proud owner of a beautiful piece of work but also supports an artist to continue creating. Local art is original, affordable, one-of-a-kind and is exclusive to just you. Help grow our community by supporting emerging local artists. It’s a gift that keeps on giving for the owner, the artist, community and of course those who also get to enjoy seeing it. Above all, buying art is one of the best ways to invest in our very own community.

  1. Healing & Mental Health

Nurturing your body & mind through creative work can improve mental health. Experts say creativity helps you express parts of yourself that are being hidden. Creating art can provide a distraction from your usual thoughts and helps you get into a meditative-like state which focuses your mind and relieves stress.

If you/your child are experiencing any of these situations, art therapy can help your well-being: high-stress occupation, mental health disorder, learning disability, brain injury or chronic illness. Feeling stressed, overwhelmed or lacking clarity? Take 15 minutes to pick up a paint brush, dance, sing or whatever creative outlet you like… to just let go.

4.     Improves your child’s self-esteem & academic performance

Celebrating your child’s artwork will boost his/her drive, focus and concentration. Thanks to stimulation of dopamine, a feel-good neurotransmitter. It can prepare them to learn and enhance their sense of accomplishment. For a child, this can have a lasting impact into their adult life and has shown improvement in GPAs and test scores.

  1. Out-of-the-box thinking

In today’s economic landscape, being innovative and creative can set you apart from others. The arts encourage creative-thinking, stimulates your brain to grow new neurons and enhances problem-solving skills. There is a myth that creative thinking involves the right-side of your brain. However, doctors say it involves recruitment from both halves of your brain. The Scientific American Journal states, ‘Creative cognition involves divergent thinking (a wide range of topics/subjects), making remote associations between ideas, switching back and forth between conventional and unconventional thinking (cognitive flexibility), and generating original, novel ideas that are also appropriate to the activity you are doing. In order to do this well, you need both right and left hemispheres working in conjunction with each other.’

The mere process of creating art can change your life. From the structure of your brain to providing you peace and improved mental health, we should all celebrate the arts.

As an artist, I can attest to this. Join us, it’s a beautiful experience.
